Android 17 With New Multitasking Tools and Expanded Gemini Features
Key Insight
AI Agents can help your business operate faster, smarter, and more efficiently.

Google has officially launched Android 17 alongside Wear OS 7, with Pixel devices receiving the update first. More than a typical software refresh, Android 17 represents Google's biggest push yet to make artificial intelligence a core part of everyday smartphone experiences.

The release arrives just months before Apple is expected to roll out its AI-powered Siri upgrade this September, highlighting an intensifying race to bring practical AI features to consumers. While Apple is still preparing its next wave of AI capabilities, Google is already embedding AI directly into creation, communication, and productivity experiences across Android devices.

Android 17's Biggest Upgrade: AI Built Into Your Phone

Android 17 introduces three new AI models integrated directly into the operating system:

  • Gemini Omni: Edit Videos With Your Voice

Gemini Omni lets users edit videos simply by speaking naturally to their phones. Instead of manually trimming clips or adding effects, users can make changes through conversational commands.

  • Lyria 3: Turn Ideas Into Music

Lyria 3 can generate complete music tracks from a text prompt or even a photo. Whether creating background music for videos, social posts, or personal projects, users can generate original tracks within seconds.

  • AudioLM: Real-Time Speech Translation

AudioLM powers real-time speech-to-speech translation on the Pixel 10a, making multilingual conversations feel more seamless and natural.

Android 17 Is Also About Getting More Done

Beyond AI, Android 17 introduces several upgrades designed to make everyday smartphone use faster and more productive.

  • Bubble Bar Makes Multitasking Faster

A new interface called Bubble Bar lets users pin and organize recent apps as floating bubbles at the bottom of the screen. The feature is designed to reduce friction when jumping between apps and make multi-app workflows feel more seamless.

  • Personalized Voice Messages

Users can now leave customized outgoing voice messages when they can't answer calls, replacing generic automated responses.

  • Expanded "Take a Message" Availability

Google is also rolling out its AI-powered "Take a Message" feature to more global markets, allowing users to handle missed calls more intelligently.

  • Dual Camera Mode for Creators

Android 17 now allows users to record both their screen and selfie camera simultaneously. The feature is ideal for reaction videos, tutorials, gameplay commentary, and social media content creation.

Your Devices Are Getting Safer Too

Android 17 and Wear OS 7 also introduce significant safety and security improvements.

  • Pixel Watch can automatically contact emergency services and selected contacts after detecting a severe fall, car crash, or loss of pulse.
  • Find Hub adds "Mark as Lost" and live threat detection capabilities.
  • Parental controls now support PIN-based setup without requiring account linking.
  • Foldable phones receive a dedicated gaming mode featuring a split-screen layout and dynamic game controls.
  • Wear OS 7 introduces app mirroring, allowing live updates from phone apps to appear directly on the watch.

Gemini Is Expanding Beyond Phones

Google is also bringing more Gemini-powered experiences to Wear OS. Users will be able to create personalized widgets simply by describing what they want, while Gemini's "Personal Intelligence" features aim to provide more contextual assistance by connecting information across Google apps and conversations. Google also claims Wear OS 7 can deliver up to 10% better battery life compared with previous versions.

Google's Biggest AI Bet Yet

Android 17 makes it clear that Google sees AI as more than a chatbot or search feature. By combining video editing, music creation, real-time translation, multitasking tools, and wearable intelligence, Google is positioning Android as a platform where AI actively helps users create, communicate, and get things done. The update is rolling out to Pixel devices now, with support for more Android devices expected in the coming months.
